The Mat Companion series provides a methodical approach for using science to balance and connect the body and mind in yoga. The fourth book concludes the series with arm balances and inversions—two pose categories that clearly integrate opposites within the body.
In our bipedal form, the hips and lower extremities are the weight-bearing construct. The more mobile shoulders and upper extremities allow us to interact with the world. In arm balances, we invert this construct, thereby strengthening the muscles, bones, and ligaments of the upper extremities. From an energetic perspective, arm balances stimulate the nerve plexuses associated with the fourth and fifth chakras. Practicing these poses with precision moves nerve impulses upwards through the subtle body. This opens the way for the unimpeded flow of energy from the lower and more primordial regions of the sacral plexus to the higher-functioning levels of the brain.
A similar balancing of opposites takes place with inverted poses. Consider that most of our time is spent with the head above the heart and the lower extremities below it. Inversions reverse this, bringing the head below the heart and the lower extremities above it. Potential benefits of this body position include lowered blood pressure and heart rate and improved circulation of endorphins in the brain. All of this prepares the body for deep relaxation.
Arm balances invigorate and stimulate the mind. Inversions bring it to rest.

Anatomy for Arm Balances and Inversions Yoga Mat Companion 4 edition by Ray Long MD FRCSC Chris Macivor Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
This series is a terrific adjunct to any yoga teaching practice. If you're working with an injury, or tightness, the illustrations and text provide clear explanations with technical precision. I wish the bindings were stronger; I will eventually need to get these in digital form.
Having this book has been a great instrument to help my students break down poses even more. Having the illustrations in such detail has given my students the ability to really visualize what they are striving for in each pose! If you are an instructor or a student looking to deepen your own practice, this is a must have!
This whole series is wonderfully illustrated - a complete guide.
Use this book often for reference and has a lot of information.
All of the Yoga Mat Companion books are a must if you are in the fitness field. I am a NASM certified personal trainer and I use these books constantly. They really helped me learn and UNDERSTAND the muscles of the body and how they work and cues to activate certain ones. You don't need to practice yoga to get the benefits from these books. I do plan on eventually going through yoga teacher training at some point in my career and I know having these will definitely benefit me.
I am OBSESSED with these books! Be sure to get all four in the series, along with Ray Long's Scientific Keys. These are brilliant if you're a serious yoga student. If you're new to the practice, maybe get something a little more basic to start, and then buy all of these!
vol 4 arrived separately packaged individually
after vols 1/2/3 which were sent ahead as soon as
available, to avoid delay and at no extra cost..
all arrived well before estimated delivery time..
again, in perfect new condition etc..
having now had some opportunity to read thru these vols
beyond initial [delighted] skimming and sampling, the best
amplification is probably that everything mentioned in
my review of vol 1 has been further confirmed..
the more you read and take in the information and
amazing imagery, the more you realize that creative
experts in teaching and yoga have attempted a new standard
for this type of yoga physiology teaching resource..
best advice is still to fully investigate dr longs great
website bandahyoga.com which allows you to go thru these
wonderful books page by page at the click of a mouse..
