In a quintessential small Midwestern town, Professor Joshua Stone is a popular, outgoing, and quirky professor at Grant’s Hill College. He lives alone with his dog, rides a bicycle everywhere, and has memorized the high school mascot names of his students.  He’s a 3-on-3-basketball player and fan who’s insular life centers around his teaching. Joshua confronts his demons while recovering from an unprovoked near-death attack. His search for an elusive witness challenges his instinctive moral and ethical compass. Woven through a gripping storyline is one man’s quest to find strength and courage. Joshua is plucked from the cocoon of teaching English composition at a small liberal arts college and thrust in to survival mode, seeking a logical explanation for the irrational violence.

Concealed The Book of Joshua Fritz Nordengren 9780615765914 Books

In "Concealed: The Book of Joshua" Fritz Nordengren has spun a most thought provoking yarn. The debut novel is set in a typical small Midwestern college town with fully fleshed out characters - from the protagonist Professor Joshua Stone to secondary characters such as Jerry Coogan, a tenured professor who makes the briefest of appearances.

In Stone Nordengren has painted a portrait of a complex man. The professor rides around campus on his bike with his dog in tow, he meets colleagues for drinks and enjoys 3-on-3 basketball games. Stone strives to keep order - he keeps four seasons worth of clothing in carefully labeled garment bags and he memorizes the high school mascot names of every student. These character traits serve to highlight the sense of loneliness and vulnerability that pervades the novel.

Stone's life is irrevocably changed when he is left for dead after an unprovoked attack. His search to understand who attacked him and why forces him on a journey of self-discovery. What truly makes this novel compelling is not only the way Stone handles the aftermath of his assault, but the way in which those close to him respond.

Nordengren has succeeded in not only creating a captivating narrative but in pushing readers to ask whether events define people or whether people can transcend certain events. To his credit, Nordengren steps aside and lets readers judge for themselves.

"Concealed" is a well-written, fast paced and thoughtful novel.

Concealed The Book of Joshua Fritz Nordengren 9780615765914 Books Reviews

This was the most fascinating book I've read in a long time!! The author is so awesome in writing such a detailed story plot and it's characters are so likable is like I was there in the story line with it's so interesting characters!! I just loved this book, I couldn't put it away!! It keeps you glued to the very end!! My compliments to the author, he writes such awesome books!!
There were times when I wanted to put this down. Animal cruelty is far outside of my comfort zone, and the description in this story was more than I cared to endure. There were also moments when the story sort if stumbled along and felt impossibly dull. However, in the end, I was glad that I had managed to persevere. Although the final scenes were uncomfortably plausible, the entirety of the story came together well.
CONCEALED, The Book of Joshua, ISBN 9780615765914, by F. R. "Fritz" Nordengren is a difficult to evaluate story of an English professor in a small town college.
In the prologue-like first chapter Joshua Stone is sketchily first introduced closing down his office after his last class. He leaves office and walks to the parking lot where he is viciously attacked and left near death. The following chapters revert to a few weeks earlier and then progress from there through his activity, and that of others, up to and through the attack, his subsequent post attack traumatic reaction, his reactive response, the immediate fall-out, and eventual climax.
Joshua is presented as a classic small college professor of `the old school', predictably conservatively dressed, quite rigid in his habits, well liked by his students, accepted by his colleagues with one or two closer friendships, and with a bicycle for his only transportation. He is 42 years old and sporadically attempts to foster a relationship with Liv Olsson, the Director of Academic Counseling for whom he has a tentative attraction. He acquires a dog that has been injured and it becomes an important part of the story.
Evaluation of this book, as stated, is difficult. If a reader enjoys a rather laid back, rambling tale of a type of character that rarely can be found today, this may be for you, although there no doubt will be frustration because, as stated earlier, one is provided only with snippets of the person. If one believes in or enjoys a degree of mysticism, it plays a significant part in this book. If a person is interested in the manner in which an individual might act and react to the trauma, a quite interesting scenario is provided, even to the final ambivalence that produces disastrous results.
Conclusion a slow moving, rambling, plot-driven mystery with mystical overtones that could profit from editing but, in spite of itself, provides an interesting scenario. Reviewed by John H. Manhold, award winning fiction/non-fiction author.
I don't know what I expected when I bought this book, but this has to be one of the most thought-provoking books I've read in a long time. I can't stop thinking about it!

I like how the author introduced the crisis, added some characters, described how Dr. Stone came to the college and then exposed the crisis in excruciating detail. Then the drama thoroughly unfolded as more players were added into the mix and Stone's search for truth and obsession took over. Interestingly, this was not a high drama whodunnit but a subtle, painful look at one man's extreme loss, his attempt to heal and protect himself and manage his life after crisis.

Every character was beautifully introduced and blended into the story, from the paramedics to the police detectives, from the other college professors to the antagonist, Underwood. And don't forget Rex.

The trick with the quarters, the "joke", the white dog......seemingly small, recurring incidents but skillful additions which gave the story a "feeling" which I find difficult to explain, but it was there. It was like reading a book with white noise in the background. The climax at the chapel with the sleight of hands from Addison was poignant and very well done. The ending, soft and hopeful.

What a pleasure to read a book with such soulful expression and intelligence. Just wonderful!
